Thousands of Auburn fans have showed up to mourn the historic Toomer's Corner oak trees
Sadly, the Alabama fan who has been charged in the Auburn tree murders has given Crimson Tide fans and SEC fans in general a big, ugly black eye throughout the nation.
Killing iconic and majestic 130-year-0ld live oaks at Toomer’s Corner is despicable enough, but creating the perception that one of the nation’s most passionate and loyal fan bases are a bunch of deranged yahoos is almost as bad.
Alabama fans are among the most loyal and classy in college football, but ”Al from Dadeville” — the caller who phoned into the Paul Finebaum radio show in Birmingham and bragged about killing the trees before being arrested by police – creates an incredibly negative stereotype of ‘Bama fans. It certainly doesn’t help that the Alabama fan who was arrested for the crime named his two children “Bear” and “Crimson” and ended his eerie call Finebaum’s show with an angry, “Roll damn Tide!”
For all the reasons listed above, the Auburn tree murderer is our No. 1 candidate for Dud of the Week.
We have a number of prime candidates for Dud of the Week beginning with Trevor Bayne, the 20-year-old winner of the Daytona 500 and Kobe Bryant, the MVP of the NBA All-Star Game.
Also, how about a Stud of the Week nomination for the many Alabama fans who have condemned the tree-killer’s disgusting act and even started a Facebook page — “Tide for Toomer’s” – in hopes of raising money to replace the landmark oak trees at Auburn.
